Multiscale Modeling of Heterogeneous Media

The goal of multiscale modeling is to take into account the interconnectivity of the essential phenomena occurring at multiple length and time scales preserving macroscopic conservation principles.Scale linking is performed using hierarchical, concurrent or a combination of these schemes. Examples of concurrent coupling methods are hybrid atomistic-continuum techniques  in which spatial regions subjected to large local field variations (such as dislocations or cracks) are represented atomistically, while the rest of the model is continuum. For the simulation of heterogeneous materials hierarchical multiscale methods are developed where a macroscopic model exists for a properly selected set of macroscopic variables which needs to be augmented with microscopic computations.
